Weekly Quizzes Assignment
Purpose
The Weekly Quizzes are designed to help you assess your understanding of course material before each class session. These low-stakes assessments encourage you to engage with the readings, identify areas where you need clarification, and come to class prepared to learn. The quizzes provide immediate feedback on your comprehension and help you gauge your readiness for exams.
Quiz Format
Structure
- 10 multiple-choice questions per attempt
- Questions are randomly drawn from a larger question bank (more than 10 questions available)
- Each quiz covers the topic(s) assigned for that week
- Questions test conceptual understanding, definitions, applications, and interpretation
Timing
- 20 minutes per attempt once you start the quiz
- The timer begins as soon as you open the quiz
- You must complete all questions before time expires
- Plan accordingly—don’t start a quiz unless you have the full 20 minutes available
Attempts
- Unlimited attempts while the quiz is open
- Your highest score will be recorded for grading purposes
- Each attempt presents a different random selection of questions from the question bank
- You can retake the quiz as many times as you want to improve your score
When and Where
Timing: Quizzes must be completed before the class session for which the material is assigned
Availability Window: Quizzes typically open one week before the class session and close just before class begins
Take your first attempt after completing the assigned reading to identify areas you need to review. Use subsequent attempts to reinforce your learning and improve your score. Each attempt helps you learn!

How to Prepare
Before Your First Attempt
- Complete all assigned readings thoroughly
- Review your Major Takeaways assignment
- Watch any assigned video tutorials or lectures
- Take notes on key concepts, definitions, and formulas
- Review examples from the textbook or class materials
- Check your understanding by self-testing on key concepts
Between Attempts
- Review questions you missed (Canvas shows which questions were incorrect)
- Return to the readings to clarify misunderstood concepts
- Consult your notes and Major Takeaways
- Ask questions in Canvas discussions or office hours
- Give yourself time between attempts to review and learn
Don’t just memorize answers—focus on understanding why each answer is correct. This deeper learning will help you on exams and in applying concepts to real research scenarios.
Grading
Weekly Quizzes are worth 5% of your final course grade.
Scoring
- Each quiz is scored out of 10 points (1 point per question)
- Your highest attempt is recorded
- Scores are automatically calculated by Canvas
- Your two lowest quiz scores will be dropped at the end of the semester
Impact on Final Grade
Since your two lowest scores are dropped, you have some flexibility:
- If you miss a quiz, it can be one of your dropped scores
- If you perform poorly on a quiz, you have a buffer
- This policy accounts for occasional missed readings or difficult weeks
The two-lowest-scores policy is designed to reduce stress and account for life’s unexpected events. However, don’t rely on this policy—aim to complete all quizzes to maximize your learning and preparation for exams.
Academic Integrity
While AI tools might seem helpful, using AI to answer quiz questions defeats the purpose of this assignment. The quizzes are designed to:
- Assess your understanding of the material
- Identify gaps in your knowledge before class
- Prepare you for exams and real-world application
- Provide feedback on what you need to review
Using AI to answer questions:
- Gives you a false sense of understanding
- Prevents you from identifying what you don’t know
- Undermines your exam preparation
- Leads to superficial learning that won’t help in practice
- May constitute academic dishonesty
Instead: Take quizzes honestly to see what you truly understand, then use your results to guide your studying.
Quiz Integrity Guidelines
Allowed:
- ✅ Using your textbook, notes, and course materials
- ✅ Referring to your Major Takeaways assignment
- ✅ Taking multiple attempts to improve your understanding
- ✅ Reviewing material between attempts
Not Allowed:
- ❌ Using AI tools (ChatGPT, Claude, etc.) to answer questions
- ❌ Sharing quiz questions or answers with other students
- ❌ Copying answers from other students
- ❌ Taking quizzes on behalf of another student
- ❌ Having someone else take your quiz
Tips for Success
Do’s ✅
- Start early: Don’t wait until right before class to take your first attempt
- Read carefully: Make sure you understand what each question is asking
- Use your resources: Open book/notes quizzes are still challenging—use your materials!
- Learn from mistakes: Review incorrect answers between attempts
- Take your time: You have 20 minutes—use it wisely
- Check your work: Review all answers before submitting
- Track patterns: Notice which topics you consistently struggle with and focus study there
Don’ts ❌
- Don’t rush: Taking the quiz without reading the material wastes an attempt
- Don’t guess blindly: Use logic and partial knowledge to eliminate wrong answers
- Don’t rely on memory alone: Even with unlimited attempts, understanding beats memorization
- Don’t ignore feedback: Canvas tells you which questions you missed—use that information!
- Don’t wait until the last minute: Technical issues or time constraints could prevent completion
- Don’t use AI: You’re only hurting your own learning and exam preparation
- Don’t share answers: Academic integrity violations have serious consequences
Common Questions
As many as needed to feel confident in your understanding. Most students take 2-3 attempts, but there’s no limit.
Yes! Canvas shows you which questions were incorrect after each attempt (though it may not show the correct answers).
The quiz will automatically submit with whatever you’ve completed. Manage your time carefully—about 2 minutes per question.
No. Once you begin, the 20-minute timer runs continuously until you submit or time expires.
Contact the instructor immediately with documentation of the issue. Don’t wait until after the quiz closes.
Quiz questions help prepare you for exams by covering the same concepts, but exam questions may be more challenging or applied.
No need! You’ve already earned the highest possible score. Use that time to prepare for other aspects of the course.
You’ll receive a 0 for that quiz, but remember that your two lowest scores (including zeros) are dropped from your final grade.
While technically possible, it’s not recommended. Quizzes are easier to navigate and complete on a computer with a reliable internet connection.
Technical Requirements
Before Starting a Quiz
- ✓ Stable internet connection: Ensure you won’t lose connection during the 20 minutes
- ✓ Compatible browser: Use Chrome, Firefox, or Safari (avoid Internet Explorer)
- ✓ Adequate time: Start only when you have at least 20 uninterrupted minutes
- ✓ Required materials ready: Have your textbook, notes, and resources accessible
- ✓ Quiet environment: Minimize distractions to focus on the quiz
If You Experience Technical Issues
- Document the problem: Take screenshots if possible
- Note the time: Record when the issue occurred
- Contact instructor immediately: Don’t wait—send a Canvas message right away
- Try another attempt: If you have time and the quiz is still open, try again
- Check Canvas announcements: The instructor may post updates about known issues
Relationship to Other Assignments
Quizzes work together with other course components:
Major Takeaways → Prepares you for quizzes by identifying key concepts
- Quizzes → Assess your understanding before class
- Class Participation → Clarify concepts you found challenging on quizzes
- Labs → Apply concepts you learned about in quizzes
- Exams → Test deeper understanding of concepts introduced in quizzes
Use quizzes to identify weak areas, focus your studying on those topics, clarify questions in class, and practice application in labs. This cycle maximizes your learning!
Summary
Weekly quizzes are a valuable tool for:
- Self-assessment: Identifying what you know and what needs review
- Active learning: Engaging with material multiple times through repeated attempts
- Exam preparation: Familiarizing yourself with question formats and concept coverage
- Timely feedback: Getting immediate results to guide your studying
- Low-stakes practice: Building confidence before higher-stakes exams
Approach quizzes as opportunities to learn rather than obstacles to overcome. Use them strategically to maximize your understanding and success in the course!
Remember: The goal isn’t just to earn points—it’s to genuinely understand the material. Honest self-assessment through quizzes will lead to better exam performance and more useful knowledge for your future career.
